Solidification & Dewatering

Loureiro conducts treatability testing on excavated solid materials that are required to meet land disposal restrictions (LDRs) prior to being transported offsite.  One of the LDR requirements is conformance to the paint filter test, which Loureiro evaluates through solidification and dewatering methods.  Our test procedures aid in the selection of the equipment and technologies that would meet these LDRs in the most cost-effective manner.

Solidification

Solidification consists of the addition of binding agents or pozzolans that meet LDRs as well as expand the landfill applications in which the excavated sediments can be used. Through the evaluation of various combinations of amendments (e.g., Portland cement, fly ash, slag) and dosages, the minimum addition (percent) required for compliance with the paint filter test is determined.

Dewatering

Dewatering consists of the removal of free liquids from soils / sediments through one of the following methods:

  • Belt Press
  • Centrifuge
  • Plate & frame filter press

Mechanical dewatering may reduce transportation and disposal costs by reducing the weight of water in the solid material.  Any elutriate produced during dewatering is also evaluated for treatment methods that would reduce constituents of concern (COCs) to acceptable levels.
