Loureiro's treatability capabilities and wastewater division services were used to optimize the UTAS Miami Gardens Zero Discharge Wastewater Treatment and Recycle System. As part of a water reduction evaluation, Loureiro identified where water was being used throughout the facility and what the most effective strategy would be to refine system operations. The facility’s plating lines were determined to have the highest water usage and therefore the greatest potential for effective water usage reduction. During the evaluation, Loureiro conducted a wastewater treatability study using samples collected from each of the different types of rinsewaters within the plating lines. Based on the treatability results, the most effective (both scientifically and cost-wise) solution was selected which consisted of ion exchange and an evaporation / condensing system to treat on site regenerant. Loureiro conducted a pilot study to evaluate the effectiveness of the selected solution and once proven successful, the full-scale treatment system was designed and installed. To date, the treatment system operates successfully and saves the facility approximately 600,000 gallons of water per year at over 90% efficiency and zero discharge. Following the installation of the system, Loureiro has continued to perform maintenance activities and provides 24/7 on-call support.
